‘DIWALI ‘- From the dawn of January to the dusk of December, India remains immersed in a number of festivals celebrated in every part of the country. Needless to mention, every Indian festival has its importance and is beautiful in its own way. But the festive bells that ring in October are as grand as it gets.

Across cultures and around the globe, October is the month that includes themes of light, color, and food. Here is a quick list of what October has in store.

One of the most prominent festivals in Hindu culture – DIWALI is celebrated with much fanfare throughout various communities in the Indian diaspora. Colloquially known as the “festival of lights”, it is generally a five-day celebration wherein families get together, friends indulge in merry-making, light lamps and diyas as well as gorge on sweet delicacies.

This festival is celebrated on Amavasya or ‘no moon’ day and heralds the dawn of a New Year according to the Hindu calendar.

It also foretells of fresh beginnings as we open new books and diaries as well as cleans our home. Whoever said that after every dark night, comes a new dawn was surely right on the money!

Diwali is a Hindu festival celebrated every year as a festival of lights. It is very significant festival for the people of Hindu religion.

Everyone becomes very happy on the occurrence of this festival and celebrates with lots of preparations.

Diwali is a five days long festival begins from Dhanteras and ends at Bhai dooj. It falls every year on fifteenth day of the Kartik month. People start cleaning their houses few days before the main date of Diwali such as white washing, dusting, painting, etc. Houses get decorated using real or artificial flowers and other decorative materials.

Everywhere looks very dazzling because of the lighting small earthen lamps and electric bulbs. It is considered that Goddess Lakshmi makes a visit to each houses in the night.

Diwali that’s why everyone lights their houses to welcome the Goddess. In return, Goddess gives her blessings to her devotees for healthy and prosperous life.

At this day, everyone performs puja of Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesha and then distributes gifts and sweets to their friends, neighbors and relatives.

However, Diwali is not just about burning candles, fireworks and gambling but also rediscovering your inner peace. Hang lanterns this Diwali keeping in mind that they signify God’s grace and bathe your home in such luminescence that there is no place for any darkness.

Make this holiday truly momentous and savour the differing tastes and cultures of India.
